Western Avenue Parent Pick-up Procedures 2020

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Keeping your kids safe during arrival and dismissal is something we have been working to improve at Western Avenue School. The school’s parent advisory group and staff have explored different options throughout the year and have been adjusting procedures to ensure safety and efficiency is a priority at Western Avenue School. Our solution is Pick Up Tags for those students riding in a vehicle, the bus or being picked up on the playground. Pick Up Tags allow staff members to move the car line quickly, ensure students are on the correct bus and a safe adult is on the playground.

Attached to this letter are 2 Pick Up Tags for a vehicle and 3 Pick Up tags for your child’s backpack with an assigned number. All family members have the same assigned number. Anyone picking students in the car lines or on the playground will need their Pick Up Tag visible. You may make additional copies if you need more Pick Up Tags for your family.

We truly appreciate your flexibility as we adjust procedures. Change can be slightly messy at first and we appreciate your patience as we work to adapt to improve. Please feel free to contact the office with any questions.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Isabelli

DROP-OFF REMINDERS:

  • Pull up all the way in the car line until a staff member signals you to stop.

  • Have children walk to the crosswalk to cross the bus lane

  • If your child is being dropped off on the near-by streets they need to walk down to the crosswalk/concession area for a safe crossing and not between the vehicles.

  • Do NOT leave a parked vehicle in the car line

  • Parking on Vardon is only allowed if an adult is going to escort children to the appropriate crosswalk.  Children will not be allowed to be dropped off unless in the car drop off lane without a parent escorting then to crosswalk.

PICK UP TAG PROCEDURES

Playground Pick-Up

  • Please bring your car tag on the playground to identify that you are the safe person picking up your child.

Vehicle Procedures:

  • Your child’s Pick Up Tag will need to be displayed on the rearview mirror of your car during drop off and pick up. Please face your number outward when hanging your tag/s.

  • Pull up all the way in the car line until a staff member signals you to stop.

  • Staff will relay which vehicle Pick Up Tag numbers are in the car line and have those students ready to load in the vehicles.

  • Your child will be directed to your vehicle by a staff member. Parents in the car line need to stay in the vehicle at all times. Staff will assist with opening car doors for younger students if needed.

Pick-up Tag FAQs:

Q: Why the need for pick-up tags?

A: We want to be pro-active on student safety.  Sometimes we have guest teachers that don’t know our families or a situation occurs where one family member may not be allowed to pick up a child.  This ensures your students are going home with the correct adult.

Q: If my child is a walker do they need a tag?

A: No they may walk home

Q: If I’m picking up on the playground do I  need a pickup tag?

A: Yes to help identify you as a safe person to pick up your student.

Q: If my child is going home for a play date with someone else do I need a copy of their tag?

A: No, please just send a note to the office and we will let the appropriate staff know who they should go home with.

Q: What if I forget my pick-up tag?

A: You must go to the office to pick up your child

Q: Who will check to verify the tags?

A: Staff on pick-up duty will verify that the student has gone with their correct adult

Q: What happens if I lose my pick up tag?

A: The office has a list of all the numbers and we will make you a new one.  Please just contact the office.
